New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using such treatments should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
